Message of the AFPI President for the Feast of Saint Barbara 2024

Distinguished members of the Board of Trustees, Artillery Foundation of the Philippines Incorporated (AFPI) led by our Vice-Chairperson and the 7th Regiment Commander of the Army Artillery Regiment – Cannoneer Virgilio “Bart” Bartolome, active and retired artillery officers and enlisted personnel, fellow cannoneers and esteemed past awardees of the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara and the Distinguished Order of Saint Barbara, the officiating priest, ladies and gentlemen, Good morning.

It is a great privilege to stand before you today as we gather to honor the Feast of Saint Barbara, the revered patron saint of our artillery corps. This celebration is not only a tribute to her legacy of strength, courage, and protection but also a meaningful occasion to reflect on the enduring bonds that unite us as members of the artillery community.

Today’s gathering holds even greater significance as we welcome and recognize the presence of past awardees of the Honorable and Distinguished  Order of Saint Barbara. Your exemplary contributions and unwavering dedication to the artillery profession have set a standard of excellence that continues to inspire the generations that follow. As cannoneers, your achievements remind us of the critical role artillery plays in safeguarding peace, ensuring precision in our operations, in contributing  to the advancement of the  artillery profession in the field of arts and science and in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.

On this same date last year, the then 9th Regiment Commander conceptualized the construction of the Saint Barbara image and park at Headquarters AAR, with the invaluable support of the Artillery Foundation.  The event was marked by a vibrant celebration, complete with festive “barrio fiesta”- style booths and a street dance competition. This meaningful occasion laid the foundation for what is now envisioned as an annual tradition among artillery personnel to celebrate the Feast of Saint Barbara.

We also extend our appreciation to the current Regiment Commander for continuing this meaningful tradition and honoring the feast of our patron saint. With this in mind, let us all make it a point to gather at the Regiment each year and actively participate in this cherished celebration.

As we commemorate this special day, let us take pride in our shared history and renew our commitment to the values that Saint Barbara embodies—faith, resilience, and steadfastness in the face of challenges. May this reunion not only strengthen our camaraderie but also deepen our dedication to the noble traditions of the artillery.

Let us continue to uphold the legacy of Saint Barbara with honor and integrity, ensuring that the artillery remains a source of strength for our armed forces and our nation.

Thank you and may Saint Barbara guide and protect us all.
